My role is like storytelling. What I love is taking the data, waving the magic wand, and seeing the numbers start talking. No one in the industry has the data we have. We can provide lots of insights for the market and use this data to see trends and make decisions. I love working at RightShip because we have the capacity to use insights to drive real-world impact.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve done in my life explored the types of vessels to pass through the Great Barrier Reef. We discovered lots of vessels were rated one star, which means a higher risk of incidents, and as a result there might be a high risk of pollution. Then we shared this data with the Queensland Government so that they could create solutions. When we see the positive outcomes of our work on the industry, and the environment, that’s encouraging.
I come from Sardinia, which is an island at the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. I developed a love of the element and went to nautical school from the age of 14. After studying, I got the chance to go aboard and get unpaid experience. As recently as 1995, ship owners were not enthusiastic about hiring women, but persistence paid off.
Eventually, I got a cadet contract and worked on chemical tankers, passenger ships and tugs after that. I worked as a superintendent in Venice for seven years before joining RightShip. I like the human component of my role, the diversity, the ability to work with professionals with a lot of expertise – people who speak different languages and come from different cultures.
In vetting, we need to know the vessel on a technical level, but I also need to know the situation, what this customer needs and satisfy or exceed their. The human factor, in any job is what makes a difference.
I’ve always had a passion for product development and innovation. I’m pulled towards companies that embrace digital transformation and make a real difference, RightShip allows me to do this.
My role involves driving and executing the technical delivery of our safety and sustainability products. We work closely with our customers, embrace cutting edge technology and deliver leading products and services to meet their needs.
RightShip has been very supportive to me both professionally and personally, providing me professional progression and the opportunity to move across the world. I couldn’t be more thankful.”
I spent almost 30 years gong to sea. I commenced my career as a cadet in June 1987 and completed my last voyage in December 2016. A lot things changed dramatically in terms of safety and regulations during that time. I’ve been a vetting superintendent RightShip since April 2017. It was important for me to do something to help the industry. I always worked on US flagged ships; there was always money to fix the ship, good conditions, and enough food.
At RightShip, I’ve reviewed PSCs where there’s not enough food and inhumane living environments. What I like the most is reviewing incident investigation reports and seeing what a company is doing to resolve their issues. I work with like-minded colleagues – everyone is a Chief Engineer or Captain. It’s like being on a ship, working towards a common goal.
I studied environmental science at university and completed a three-month internship with RightShip. During my final year, I began working casually with the sustainability team. Once I graduated, the opportunity to transition to a full-time sustainability officer role was presented.
I have gained a deep understanding of maritime emissions and the market’s transition to decarbonisation. I now have experience in calculating GHG emissions and carbon accounting. I believe RightShip is in a powerful position to drive change – we can truly contribute to creating a more sustainable maritime industry and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
